nearly done!

Many of you are praying, many are giving: thanks!

God’s provided nearly 99% of my Ukraine support.

On my way back to Chattanooga from pre-field training in New York City, I was able to spend some time with my nephews.  We went to the beach to visit their “great-grandma”:

One evening while at my brother and sister-in-laws, my brother and I took the boys exploring in the woods up behind their house:

Then my mom and I drove south for a two day visit with my grandmother.  We had an overnight stay with my sister and her new husband during our drive back to Chattanooga.  God gave me good, challenging, helpful training in NYC, and then time with family I won’t see often over the next two years.

While in New Jersey, I thanked my brother’s church for their support, and this Sunday I have an opportunity to thank my home church here in Chattanooga.

Stay posted for additional updates: I’m heading to Kiev soon!

God is good!

A month in Astoria

5 08 2012

This past Wednesday I left Astoria, Queens, New York City, after living there all of July for a month of pre-field training.  It was a good, busy, full month including taking classes, working with Astoria Community Church, exploring Astoria, and experiencing some of the richness of New York City.  I didn’t want to leave.

Our group of 49 missionaries and 51 kids was divided into ministry teams, and my team of eight missionaries, three interns, and four kids planned, advertized, and held a free week-long English as a Second Language (ESL) class.

The classes we took covered cross-cultural ministry, team dynamics, and language acquisition skills.   We worked hard, saw incredible beauty in the city, and saw the beauty of God unifying our ministry team through prayer.  We discovered halfway through the month that our most productive ministry team meetings were those where we’d take 20 to 30 minutes at the beginning to take time to pray in an unhurried manner, as a group.

Pray with me for the growth of God’s kingdom in Astoria, in Kiev, and all around the world.  The wall below was just around the corner from where I lived all month in Astoria:

May it be a reminder for constant prayer for Astoria and the people of God who are gathered there, for your neighborhood, and for the believers I’ll soon be joining in Kiev.

crazy-busy week = pray!

25 06 2012

Hi friends,

I don’ t know about you, but my week looks packed as I try to wrap up a number of things here prior to a month of pre-field training in New York City. Its tempting to think I don’t have time to soak in Scripture each morning, listen to God, and talk to him, but this is when I need that the most.

Pray that I’ll stay focused and present, that I’ll make wise choices with my time, and that the joy of the Lord would be my strength. Pray for me and all the other MTW missionaries who’ll spend July studying and practicing language acquisition skills, team dynamics, and cross-cultural ministry in New York City.

Pray that the reality of Jesus’ resurrection life would transform my daily routines and attitudes, that joy would permeate all I am and do.
